Welcome to Drivetrain-Direct!

Drivetrain refers to the group of vehicle components that generate power and deliver it to the road surface, water, or air. This group of components includes the engine, transmission, driveshafts, differentials, and the final drive (drive wheels, continuous track like with tanks or Caterpillar tractors, propeller, etc.). These are all considered as drivetrain parts. A drivetrain refers simply to the engine and transmission system of the vehicle, including the other drivetrain parts only if they are integral to the transmission. In a carriage or wagon, the running gear designates the wheels and axles in distinction from the body.

A motor vehicle's drivetrain or driveline consists of the drivetrain parts excluding the engine and transmission. It is the portion of a vehicle, after the transmission, that changes depending on whether a vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive.

In a wider sense, drivetrains or powertrains are composed of all the units joined together in a vehicle to make it move. We usually speak in terms of the engine and drive train, so it's everything from the engine "back" or "out" depending on the car.

On a manual transmission, drivetrain parts and components includes the flywheel on the rear of the engine, clutch, transmission, driveshaft, differential and the axles to the wheels. Drivetrain part and component on an automatic transmission on the other hand, will not have a flywheel or clutch but rather a flex plate and torque converter. On front wheel drive cars, they sometimes have a transaxle, which is combination transmission and differential. Out from there are the axles to the wheels. These are sometimes called constant velocity joints.
